The automotive landscape of 2025 is characterized by a remarkable duality: the pursuit of thrilling performance intertwined with a growing commitment to sustainability. This year has witnessed an extraordinary convergence, where brands like Bentley, BMW M, and Mercedes-AMG have successfully integrated plug-in hybrid powertrains into their most coveted models, offering a taste of both worlds – the exhilarating roar of an internal combustion engine and the quiet efficiency of electric propulsion. For the purists who crave the unadulterated experience of combustion, Ferrari’s 12Cilindri stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of naturally aspirated V12 engines, destined to become a future classic. Aston Martin has responded with the turbocharged V12 Vanquish, a machine designed to stir the soul. Simultaneously, the ease and sophistication of mild-hybrid technology from Audi and Range Rover provide accessible entry points into electrified driving. And in a move that speaks volumes about the industry’s evolving landscape, Mercedes-Benz has introduced an all-electric variant of the iconic G-Class. This era offers drivers the best of all possible worlds, a veritable golden age for automotive enthusiasts, despite the broader industry’s flux. Engine of the Year: Ferrari F140HD in the 12Cilindri The Ferrari F140HD, the 6.5-litre V12 heart of the 12Cilindri, represents a triumphant defiance against the prevailing trend towards electrification and downsizing. Industry observers had largely written off such magnificent naturally aspirated engines, predicting their demise due to stringent emissions regulations. Yet, Ferrari has masterfully engineered this V12 to thrive without the aid of turbochargers or hybrid systems. It unleashes a formidable 819 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque, with a breathtaking ability to rev freely to 9,500 rpm. This feat is achieved through innovative technologies such as a sliding finger-follower valvetrain and lightweight internals, including titanium connecting rods. On the road, the V12 delivers a visceral mechanical symphony, a potent blend of speed and sound that is nothing short of an engineering marvel. Bravo, Ferrari. Best Use of Modernist Architecture: Cadillac House Beyond the unparalleled customization options available for the $340,000 USD Cadillac Celestiq, the experience of configuring your bespoke vehicle is elevated to an art form at Cadillac House. This impeccably restored Eero Saarinen architectural gem, located just north of Detroit, serves as a customer experience center that embodies modernist design principles. Its original 1950s travertine and terrazzo floors are a testament to a bygone era of architectural brilliance, providing a unique and inspiring backdrop for the creation of a truly personalized luxury automobile.
Top Watch to Wear on Grand Prix Weekend: TAG Heuer Formula 1 Kith Collaboration New York City’s celebrated hypebeast fashion label, Kith, has joined forces with TAG Heuer to reimagine an often-underappreciated classic from 1986, and the result is nothing short of spectacular. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Kith collaboration masterfully captures the spirit of the original with subtle co-branding throughout. Its compact 35mm case is a perfect period-correct homage. The immediate global sell-out of this timepiece is a clear indicator of the burgeoning fascination with 1980s watch design. Coolest Desk Ornament: Citroën DS 19 on balls (1/12 scale) by Norev While niche automobilia creations often catch our eye, this 1/12 scale model of the Citroën DS 19 holds particular historical significance. In 1959, Citroën’s communications department sought to highlight the innovative hydropneumatic suspension system of the DS. Their solution? A spectacular marketing stunt involving floating a full-sized DS on four balloons over a lake. Though the DS may not have achieved widespread commercial success in North America between 1956 and 1972, this miniature tribute to its ingenious engineering and the brand’s bold marketing approach is a delightful addition to any desk. Our Favourite Way to Cross Europe in a Hurry: 2025 Bentley Continental GT Speed The 2003 Bentley Continental GT was a bold, modern interpretation of the grand tourer that revitalized the brand’s fortunes, awakening a storied marque that had been resting on its laurels. Today, the Continental GT remains the benchmark against which all other grand tourers are measured, and it continues to evolve. The 2025 Continental GT Speed, the fourth generation of this magnificent machine, is a plug-in hybrid of monstrous power, delivering a combined 771 horsepower to all four wheels. The opulence of its interior, crafted with innovative materials, perfectly befits its $302,100 price tag. After an extensive drive through the Swiss Alps, it is clear that to simply call the new GT Speed “sublime” would be an understatement of its refinement, pace, and prowess. When the need arises to cover great distances with enjoyment at every moment, the Bentley Continental GT Speed is the unparalleled choice. Best Way to Memorialize Your Favourite Car: The Architect’s Garage Douglas Peterson-Hui, the artist behind The Architect’s Garage, shares his motivation for creating his popular illustrations that fuse clients’ beloved vehicles with architectural masterpieces. “I began shortly after graduating from the Master of Architecture program at TMU, just as the pandemic commenced. With scarce architectural job opportunities and abundant free time, I seized the moment to explore my creative side. What started as a social media page to share my personal work with internet strangers quickly evolved into a thriving business, attracting numerous custom commission requests. While I have reduced the volume of illustrations I produce due to my full-time role at an architecture firm, I continue to operate my art business on the side.” Prices for these bespoke pieces start at $300. Throwback of the Year: Kith × Giorgio Armani: The Traveller In a scene evoking timeless elegance, Pierce Brosnan, aging with remarkable grace, dons a double-breasted suit and cashmere overcoat as he embarks on a vacation, driving James Bond’s iconic BMW 7 Series – itself a symbol of enduring style. They are heading wherever the wind may take them, a perfect encapsulation of sophisticated travel. Car Most Fit for a Movie Villain: Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance Those who associate plug-in hybrids solely with eco-consciousness will be surprised by the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E Performance. This full-size S 63 E Performance is the ultimate dream machine for any modern movie villain. Its electric mode allows for stealthy departures and arrivals, while its commanding presence is undeniable. The formidable combination of a V8 engine and electric motor produces a staggering 791 horsepower and 1055 lb-ft of torque, ensuring that no one will be catching this villain or their crew. Best Event: Hospitality Genesis Club at the Presidents Cup The Genesis Club at Montreal’s Presidents Cup once again demonstrated Genesis’s mastery of luxury hospitality, alongside their prowess in automotive manufacturing. From its prime vantage points overlooking the 15th and 16th holes to its elevated food and beverage offerings and clever on-site brand activations, the Genesis Club proved that the Korean automaker is a true expert in creating unforgettable experiences. Boxy Design of the Year: 2024 Lexus GX Overtrail The resurgence of “boxy” aesthetics is evident not only in fashion but also in automotive design. The all-new Lexus GX has unequivocally nailed this trend this year, offering a rugged and capable SUV that perfectly embodies the boxy silhouette. It’s not just about the looks; the GX is every bit as tenacious as it appears. Special Award for Stealth Luxury: 2025 Range Rover Autobiography The modern long-wheelbase Range Rover is akin to the Loro Piana baseball cap of the SUV world – effortlessly stylish, suitable for virtually any occasion or weather, and exuding an air of understated luxury. It delivers a “million-dollar feeling” without being ostentatious, avoiding unwanted attention. The Range Rover provides a sense of security akin to a bank vault and is so impeccably over-engineered that it serves as the ultimate vehicle for discreetly navigating the world in absolute comfort. If you haven’t experienced a Range Rover recently, we strongly encourage you to take one for a test drive. You are in for a revelation. Over the past decade, the British marque has embarked on a deliberate journey to ascend into the ultra-luxury segment, a domain previously exclusive to marques like Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Today, the top-tier Range Rover Autobiography and SV models, particularly in the long-wheelbase (LWB) configuration, offer a level of opulence that rivals these esteemed British brands, but with a distinctly more understated exterior presence. The ultimate expression of your Range Rover lies in your personal taste and the specific configuration you choose. The possibilities are virtually infinite, thanks to the brand’s SV Bespoke service, which provides paint-to-sample options and bespoke custom finishes. The SV Bespoke Natural Brown Walnut veneer, with its wafer-thin metal pinstripe inlays, is a tactile masterpiece that must be felt to be truly appreciated – it possesses a handmade quality increasingly rare in today’s automotive landscape, regardless of price. The wood-rimmed steering wheel provides a consistently luxurious touch every time your hands encounter it. For those who desire to eliminate virtually any hint of plastic from the cabin, the SV Bespoke full-extended leather upgrade is available. We particularly admire the full leather headliner and the leather door trim in a deep garnet hue, which complements the walnut veneer beautifully. Understated luxury simply does not get any better than this. Best Vision of Japanese Luxury: 2025 INFINITI QX80 When the need arises to transport a significant number of people and their belongings from one destination to another, a full-size SUV is often the most practical solution. And if you are going to go big, you might as well go all the way. The all-new 2025 INFINITI QX80 embodies this maximalist approach to transporting large groups in opulent comfort. The brand’s long-standing flagship SUV has been completely redesigned from the ground up for 2025, elevating its status to compete with the finest offerings in the full-size, feature-rich, deluxe class of seven- or eight-passenger luxury vehicles. This powerful, capable, and commodious vehicle delivers a level of refinement and technology that is uniquely INFINITI, a Japanese brand that proudly draws inspiration from its heritage and tradition of hospitality. “The all-new QX80 provides us designers with a sizable canvas to express INFINITI’s artistry,” says Alfonso Albaisa, the charismatic Cuban-American designer leading the brand’s design team from Japan. “INFINITI’s hospitality begins even before you enter the vehicle,” he explained. “As you approach, the lights awaken, first illuminating the badge and the grille, and then extending to create a beautiful headlamp signature.” Upon entering the interior, you are immediately greeted by more of that artistry. You will discover finely crafted Napa leather, cool-to-the-touch metal accents, and thick wood trim. Each material is meticulously layered, drawing inspiration from the Japanese art of layering and the sophisticated interiors of private jets. The cabin’s monolithic screens provide immediate access to the QX80’s myriad features, including the exceptional Klipsch audio system. This system offers an unparalleled level of audiophile-quality sound, detail, and power, with 24 speakers and 1,200 watts of amplification.
Regarding power, the QX80 is propelled by a twin-turbocharged V6 engine that leverages decades of INFINITI’s performance vehicle heritage and racing experience to deliver 450 horsepower. This is more than sufficient to move the QX80 with impressive alacrity. The dynamically adjusting air suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, imparting a new level of both comfort and poise to this vehicle class. Furthermore, the QX80 boasts an astonishing towing capacity of 8,500 pounds. It is impossible to adequately detail the hundreds of innovative and helpful features of the new QX80 (such as the ingenious Invisible Hood View system). However, suffice it to say that this is one of the most capable and coddling vehicles available today. When combined with the promise of Japanese quality, hospitality, dependability, and longevity, the 2025 INFINITI QX80 becomes an undeniable choice for those seeking a safe and stylish family hauler. Sleekest Reinvention of an Old Favourite: 2025 Audi A5 & S5 The Audi A4 era has concluded, making way for the new Audi A5. While it retains the familiar essence of the Audi sedan we know and love, it also represents a significant departure, technically no longer classified as a sedan. The nomenclature change from A4 to A5 stems from a recalibration of Audi’s naming conventions – the details of which we will spare you. Rest assured, however, that the all-new 2025 Audi A5 and its sportier S5 counterpart are highly worthy successors to the A4’s esteemed legacy. Our recent opportunity to drive these new cars on the serpentine roads of the Maritime Alps near the French Riviera provided ample confirmation. With its dramatically redesigned profile, featuring a lowered roofline, reduced window sills, and an elongated wheelbase with short fender overhangs, the new A5 appears as if it has materialized directly from a designer’s sketchpad, retaining all its idealistic passion. Although Audi presents the A5 as a sedan, it is technically a hatchback. However, what truly matters is the significantly larger trunk opening, which enhances cargo space usability. More critically, the new A5 is the first model to be built on Audi’s next-generation platform architecture. This architectural advancement has enabled the A5 to ascend into a more premium segment in terms of comfort, convenience, and performance. Stepping inside the cabin, one is immediately struck by Audi’s new Human Centric interior design philosophy. Both the front and rear seats feel more spacious, and luxurious materials flow seamlessly across the doors and dashboard, creating a panoramic effect within the passenger cabin. A seemingly continuous OLED glass panel, which Audi refers to as its Digital Stage, is built upon the new E3 electronic architecture and features integrated ChatGPT. In terms of driving dynamics, stiffer suspension components and more direct steering contribute to an incredibly precise feel that inspires driver confidence. Power is delivered by a 201-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine or, in the S5, a new turbocharged V6 mild-hybrid producing 362 horsepower, channeled through a quick-shifting dual-clutch gearbox and Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system. An afternoon spent navigating the winding mountain roads above the Mediterranean coast was sufficient to confirm that the 2025 A5 is more than a worthy successor to the legendary A4. Most Beautiful Car of the Year: 2025 Aston Martin Vanquish Simply look at it. Don’t you just want one? Perhaps in silver metallic, midnight purple, or classic British racing green. Imagine it with a saddle-tan leather interior and a panoramic roof, or perhaps a completely bespoke colour and trim combination crafted by Aston’s Q division. The 2025 Aston Martin Vanquish is undeniably alluring. It is, without question, the most beautiful car of the year. Marek Reichman, the English designer who has been shaping Aston Martin’s vehicles since joining the firm in 2005, seems incapable of creating anything less than beautiful machines. Yet, even by his exceptionally high standards, the all-new Vanquish is a truly breathtaking masterpiece. “It’s looking for its prey. This is actually looking for one of those red cars,” Reichman quipped, offering a playful jab at Ferrari while providing a tour of his latest creation. When viewed in person, it’s difficult to believe that the $514,800 Vanquish is crafted from solid metal. The deeply sculpted surfaces across the doors and over the rear haunches appear almost liquid, shimmering like mercury when the sunlight hits them. The Vanquish possesses a timeless presence, thanks to its classical sports car proportions. Compared to the V8-engined Aston DB12, the V12-engined Vanquish is noticeably longer, contributing to its leaner, more exotic silhouette. A closer examination of the car’s profile reveals a glass-to-metal ratio of approximately 1/3 to 2/3 – the golden ratio – a principle meticulously applied throughout the design. Creating such a beauty was a significant investment. Those longer, leaner proportions necessitated the development of an entirely new platform for this car, with a maximum production of only 1,000 examples annually. Aston’s engineers also completely revised and remade the 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 to produce an immense 824 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. It is an absolute brute of an engine, its titanium exhaust system emitting a sound that is both rich and fiercely angry. Our drive across Sardinia confirmed that the new Vanquish performs just as beautifully as it looks. Plug-In Hybrid of the Year: 2025 BMW M5 & M5 Touring Introducing the 2025 BMW M5 and M5 Touring – the hybrid engineered to elevate your everyday driving experience. Trust us, engaging in speeds of 300 km/h on the unrestricted German Autobahn leaves little time or inclination for second-guessing whether BMW’s new plug-in hybrid M5 is too heavy or not. With a colossal 717 hybrid horsepower on tap, derived from a twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor, BMW’s flagship super-sedan accelerates from 150 km/h with the ferocity of a launch from a standstill. Foot to the floor, the M5 sedan pins you back into its deeply bolstered leather buckets, reeling in the horizon at an alarming rate: 200 km/h is merely a waypoint, then 250, 270, 289. The numbers on the head-up display blur as they tick past with astonishing speed. Just as we rocket past the 300 km/h mark, a delivery van emerges in our lane, forcing us to rely on the formidable carbon-ceramic brakes to slow down 2.4 tonnes of Bavarian engineering. They perform admirably, and we gracefully resume a relaxed 200 km/h cruise. Predictably, enthusiasts expressed concern regarding the super-sedan’s substantial 2.4-tonne weight, which is undeniably significant. It’s as if the previous M5 had suddenly gained the weight of a mature horse. The hybrid battery and electric motor alone contribute approximately 250 kilograms. Given that weight is the natural adversary of all performance cars, fans were understandably apprehensive, and we shared some of those concerns. However, this is M Division. When it comes to their core products, they simply do not miss: the M2, the M3 with a manual transmission, the M4 CSL, and the legendary old M5 CS are testaments to their engineering prowess. To compensate for the M5’s considerable weight, engineers reinforced the chassis and incorporated rear-wheel steering. On the winding country roads near Munich, the M5 exhibits astonishing turn-in immediacy, which can be initially surprising. This agility, combined with 738 lb-ft of torque distributed to all four wheels, makes this car devastatingly rapid. Is the new M5 as graceful as a prima ballerina? No. Is it optimized for track days? No. But is this arguably the greatest plug-in hybrid vehicle conceived to date? Quite possibly. It will dominate your daily commute, provide exhilarating weekend drives, accommodate your entire family and their luggage, and even offer 43 kilometers of all-electric range. The ultimate flourish? For the first time, the M5 is also available as a station wagon. Yes, it is even heavier, but don’t let that deter you; just drive it.
