สุดยอดยานยนต์หรูระดับอัลตร้าที่น่าจับตามองในปัจจุบัน
Rolls-Royce Phantom
The undisputed king of automotive opulence, the Rolls-Royce Phantom, re-established its dominance in 2017 and has continued to set the benchmark for ultimate luxury. Even after its 2022 facelift, which brought subtle enhancements to design and equipment, the Phantom remains an object of desire for those who seek unparalleled status and an extraordinary sense of occasion. While many owners may recline in the rear, experiencing its whisper-quiet, supremely comfortable ride that feels akin to gliding on air despite advanced run-flat tyre technology, the driving experience itself is a revelation. The precision of the thick-rimmed steering wheel, the effortless manoeuvrability of its colossal frame (standard or extended wheelbase, with the latter approaching six metres in length), the sheer flexibility and refinement of its V12 engine, and the progressive throttle response all contribute to a driving dynamic that belies its nearly three-tonne mass. The latest iteration boasts updated headlights, new wheel designs, an illuminated Pantheon grille, and optional dark chrome trim, further solidifying its place as the ultimate luxury conveyance. The engineering integrity of this magnificent machine is simply breathtaking, capable of accelerating from 0-100mph faster than a Ford Focus RS.
Rolls-Royce Ghost
The Rolls-Royce Ghost marked a pivotal moment in the brand’s history in 2009, signaling a shift towards increased production volumes. Now in its second generation, this “understudy” to the Phantom has evolved significantly. Moving beyond its former shared platform with the BMW 7 Series, the Ghost now rides on the same Architecture of Luxury as the Phantom and Cullinan. Innovations like mass dampers for the front suspension and an active anti-roll bar for the rear axle bring its ride quality astonishingly close to that of its larger sibling. However, while the Phantom is designed to be chauffeured, the Ghost is conceived for the discerning driver. Its slightly firmer, more agile ride, due in part to its more compact dimensions, makes it more suited to the cut and thrust of daily driving in bustling city environments. Yet, in terms of interior space, ambiance, and material quality, the Ghost remains just a step below the Phantom. Embracing Rolls-Royce’s “post-opulence” design philosophy, both inside and out, it offers a neoclassical fortress that is remarkably usable.
Bentley Flying Spur
Bentley’s four-door limousine, the Flying Spur, has journeyed from its inception as the Continental Flying Spur in 2006, shedding the “Continental” prefix with its significant 2014 overhaul. Now in its third generation, the Flying Spur possesses a distinct, muscular design that sets it apart from its two-door GT sibling. A new platform, co-developed with Porsche, featuring four-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars, significantly enhances its performance and isolation from the road. The cabin remains a sanctuary of opulence, providing a basis for genuinely engaging driving dynamics with improved grip, balance, and steering. The iconic 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine delivers a formidable 626bhp and immense torque, propelling the car to 100 km/h in under 4.0 seconds and capable of exceeding 320 km/h. For those seeking alternatives, Bentley offers lighter, more responsive V8 and a smooth-pulling six-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain. The hybrid, in particular, offers a serene experience in EV mode, complemented by the V6 engine’s impressive acceleration when engaged, though it lacks the V8’s distinct character. The Flying Spur has never felt more complete, embodying the essence of a supersonic, luxury driver’s car, a feat significantly attributed to its cabin. Even as Bentley’s entry-level limousine, it presents an interior of unparalleled luxury, adorned with supple leather, authentic veneers, and exquisite metalwork.
BMW i7
BMW has boldly stepped into the future with the introduction of the i7, the brand’s first all-electric 7 Series. While its exterior styling might not possess the timeless elegance of some rivals, its luxury credentials are undeniable. Lavish and refined, the i7 offers an array of onboard technologies that even surpass those found in Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Tesla, positioning it as a frontrunner among luxury EVs. Launched in early 2023 in xDrive60 dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration, it delivers over 500bhp and a usable 100kWh battery capacity, providing a real-world range of nearly 480 km verified by our road tests. Its DC rapid-charging capability is equally impressive, averaging close to 150kW during a typical charge. The i7, like all G70-generation 7 Series models, comes exclusively in long-wheelbase form, ensuring ample lounging space for rear occupants. BMW’s Executive Seating option transforms the rear into a first-class airline seat, complete with reclining capabilities. The optional 31-inch Theatre Screen, which descends from the roof, offers an unparalleled in-car cinematic experience. The air-suspended chassis, featuring four-wheel steering and active anti-roll bars, ensures a quiet, isolated ride, exceptionally stable at motorway speeds, while also endowing the car with a surprising degree of poise and balance for its size, typical of BMW’s engineering prowess. Despite its slightly modest electric range and polarizing aesthetics, the i7 stands as one of the most significant luxury EVs to date.
Mercedes-Maybach S-Class
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class represents the pinnacle of luxury within the esteemed S-Class lineage, serving as the modern standard-bearer for Daimler’s Maybach super-luxury brand. While it shares much of its DNA with the standard S-Class, a strategic decision by Daimler aimed to broaden the Maybach marque’s appeal by creating “halo” models across its regular ranges, moving away from the ultra-exclusive Maybach 57 and 62. This integration with the S-Class is both its greatest strength and potential vulnerability. While it may not command the same sheer kerbside awe as a Rolls-Royce or Bentley, its S-Class underpinnings grant it access to advanced active suspension and driver assistance technologies, contributing to its remarkable refinement and cosseting ride. The flagship S650 model’s 603bhp twin-turbocharged V12 engine (also available in the UK with a 496bhp 4.0-litre V8 S580) operates with near-silent discretion, prioritizing comfort and exemplary manners. Measuring 18 cm longer than even the long-wheelbase standard S-Class, it guarantees abundant space for even the tallest passengers.
Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Rolls-Royce’s bold foray into the super-luxury SUV segment, the Cullinan, arrived in 2018, prompted by customer demand for a more versatile, all-surface-capable, family-friendly model. Despite drawing criticism for its divisive design, which some have described as awkward and unlovely, its commercial success appears inevitable, supported by a year’s worth of confirmed orders. Beyond its controversial aesthetics, the Cullinan offers an onboard experience that is quintessentially Rolls-Royce. Its dynamic strengths include outstanding mechanical refinement, impeccable ride comfort, and excellent drivability. Height-adjustable air suspension and BMW-derived four-wheel drive provide substantial off-road capability, while its towing capacity, currently capped at 2.6 tonnes, is expected to increase to 3.5 tonnes, sufficient for even the most extravagant leisure craft.
Bentley Bentayga
The Bentley Bentayga has been a significant entrant in the £100,000+ super-SUV market since its 2016 debut. Initially lauded in its W12 form, it garnered even higher ratings with the introduction of an Audi-sourced 429bhp 4.0-litre turbocharged diesel V8 in 2017, offering comparable torque at more accessible revs. Following concerns surrounding diesel engines, Bentley ceased European sales of the diesel Bentayga, which many considered the definitive version. A V8 petrol model joined the range in the same year, followed by a plug-in hybrid in 2019. The “Speed” variant, a 626bhp paean to excess, further expanded the lineup, which underwent a comprehensive update in 2020. The Bentayga’s sumptuously plush interior, immense torque, and imperious, enveloping luxury set it apart, potentially winning over even the most skeptical critics of high-end SUVs. While not as supremely comfortable or isolating as the Cullinan, it offers a slightly sportier driving experience at the expense of that ultimate layer of ride comfort. This subtle compromise is unlikely to be noticed by drivers accustomed to regular luxury cars.
Range Rover
The original luxury SUV, now in its fifth generation, represents its finest iteration yet. While its styling is an evolution, the new Range Rover remains an imposing presence, with subtle touches like slim taillights adding visual appeal. Built on the brand’s aluminium MLA-Flex architecture, it offers a range of mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines, a plug-in hybrid, and, for ultimate performance, a BMW-sourced 523bhp 4.4-litre V8 petrol. Regardless of the powertrain, the interior is more spacious and lavishly finished than ever. The harmonious blend of modern design, advanced technology, and traditional wood and leather creates a club-class ambiance that justifies its premium price tag, now approaching six figures. Refinement and comfort are paramount, with a supple, wafty ride complemented by exceptional isolation from external noise. While passengers will revel in its cosseting qualities, the driver is equally indulged. Despite its vast dimensions, the Range Rover is remarkably easy to place on the road, thanks to excellent visibility and precise steering. The optional rear-axle steering enhances agility in confined spaces, while active anti-roll bars ensure impressive composure and tautness when driven enthusiastically. Furthermore, no rival can match its off-road prowess. Nearly half a century on, the iconic Range Rover continues to deliver.
BMW iX
The emergence of electric super-luxury cars with the performance, refinement, and versatility to truly command the road has been gradual, but the BMW iX demonstrates how it’s done. Its exterior design is polarizing, and may not appeal to everyone. However, for those who scrutinize their EV choices, considering sustainability in materials and production, and seeking deeper layers of desirability, the iX is compelling. It features eco-friendly olive-tanned leather, lightweight electrically excited motors that eliminate the need for heavy magnets, and responsibly sourced battery metals. Available in various configurations, the mid-range iX xDrive50 offers over 500bhp, all-wheel drive, and a claimed range exceeding 500 km. The flagship M60 variant boasts 600bhp. The iX truly excels in its first-class ride isolation and drivability, placing it on par with other elite vehicles in this class, despite a considerably lower price point than many. If you’re ready to electrify your status symbol, the iX offers a distinguished path.
Mercedes-Benz EQS
Mercedes-Benz’s inaugural luxury EV saloon, the EQS, is nothing short of ambitious, with its swooping coupé-like silhouette and an optional 751bhp dual-motor powertrain grabbing immediate attention. Its 107.8kWh battery provides the long-distance stamina expected of a limousine, with a claimed range just over 560 km. The interior is exceptionally spacious, and while it may not quite reach the S-Class’s standard in terms of fit and finish, its vast Hyperscreen digital dashboard option creates a significant impression, even if its navigation isn’t the most intuitive. Performance is astonishing; even the “lesser” 649bhp version tested achieved 0-100 km/h in 3.6 seconds and, more impressively, 50-110 km/h in just 2.8 seconds. At speed, it is refined and comfortable, with low noise levels and a supple, air-suspended ride. Curiously, its luxury credentials are somewhat undermined by an inconsistent low-speed ride and audible suspension operation over rough urban surfaces. While staggeringly fast in a straight line and composed through corners, there’s a distinct lack of adjustable driver feedback, reducing the experience to a simple “point and squirt.” As a luxury EV, the EQS is a commendable first effort but hasn’t yet achieved the hushed opulence that defines the S-Class. Moreover, its less-than-engaging driving dynamics make the entry-level 450+ guise a more sensible choice than the pseudo-sporty AMG trim.
Coming Soon:
Rolls-Royce Spectre: The marque’s first EV, set to replace the Phantom coupé. Featuring a dual-motor system producing 577bhp and 664lb ft of torque, powered by a 106kWh battery with an expected range exceeding 480 km. Despite weighing nearly three tonnes, it’s anticipated to reach 100 km/h in under 5.0 seconds. Rolls-Royce’s philosophy is clear: it must be a Rolls-Royce first and an EV second. Expect deliveries by the end of 2023.
Audi ‘Project Artemis’ Landjet: This all-electric successor to the current Audi A8 is poised to surpass its predecessor in desirability, design appeal, and technology, incorporating groundbreaking semi-autonomous features.
